The previous images posted were supposed to be for my contemporary directions final, however, I rather focus on those as a personal project, and do something a little more out of my element and fun for my final (especially with thesis lingering unfinished).

So I am picking out songs by rappers, and using imagery within the lyrics to create kaleidoscope collages overemphasizing the imagery within these rap songs. That is the general gist of the project.

currently the one portrait in the previous post seems a bit ambiguous, however, there will be more portraits on the way. Karmiel (כַּרְמִיאֵל‎) is one of the first cities in Israel to be established according to an urban master plan, and is located in northern Israel. It currently has a population of approximately 50,000 people, approximately 40% of whom are immigrants from 75 countries. A majority of these immigrants are from the former Soviet Union. According to the national master plan, by 2020 Karmiel will have a population of approximately 120,000 residents. Karmiel is located on the Akko-Safed road (Highway 85) on the northern edge of Lower Galilee. It was built as part of the Central Galilee Development Project. Work began in 1963, and the first 16 families moved in during the official inauguration ceremony, which took place in October 1964. In 1981, Karmiel was awarded the Beautiful Israel prize.

In 1964, when local Arabs applied for permission to move into the town, Minister of Housing Yosef Almogi replied that "Karmiel was not built to solve the problems for the people in the surrounding area."

During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Hezbollah fired 180 Katyusha rockets into Karmiel and the neighboring villages, leading to causalities and damages to buildings, roads, and cars.

There are various neighborhoods within Karmiel, and all the homes within a neighborhood look the same, and therefore were developed by the same planner. You can differentiate the neighborhoods by the style of house/condo complex. Each separated neighborhood has its own school, health center, small shopping strip mall, dentist, etc. There is a larger city center which includes a variety of stores, banks, restaurants, etc. Each neighborhood is entered by a different road circle.

Karmiel is a sister city of Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO, Metz, France, Hamar, Norway, Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Germany, and Kisvarda, Hungary.

Karmiel has a strict immigration center that every potential citizen must go through before having the potential of owning a home in the city.

I have been looking a lot at color and lines found in specific frames within the urban environment recently. I am really interested at the color choices, or lack thereof, how certain colors and lines interact with each other, and if these buildings and objects take on new meanings when abstracted within a frame by me. I do not know yet if I want to include signs of the urban environment, such as a parking meter (the second image from the bottom), or leave it more ambiguous.

Everything in the built urban environment is intended for one functional use. However, people reinterpret and reuse spaces within their environment, especially an urban one, everyday. There can be a thousand uses for a street corner, ten thousand uses for a telephone pole, and a million uses for a boarded up building.

Book to Read

I just started reading this book, edited by Tim Rieniets, who I had the pleasure of meeting while in Rotterdam for the Biennale. I picked up his book once I got back to Baltimore (I learned that the euros burn a hole through your pocket, and it is just easier to get books in the states). I am not too far into it, but it gives an in-depth history of Jerusalem before the British mandates when it was still under rule by the Ottoman Empire, and how it has morphed into what it is today. Jerusalem is a quickly adapting city given the circumstances it is under, and urban development and changes can literally happen overnight. This book gives insight into the always changing urban landscape, the extreme segregation within the city, the economy, and much more.

definitely an interesting read.

So far the entire couchsurfing thing has been working out. The person I was staying with was in a quaint little neighborhood in an area of Amsterdam called Westerpark. It wasn't too far from central station, but it was a good mile walk, nonetheless. The girl was extremely nice, also a junior in college, and so was her roommate. The bathroom was about the size, or smaller, of an airplane bathroom, but I really cannot be complaining. Even though there are only two of us traveling, it has been a great experience.

The dutch really do love their cheese. I cannot tell if I want to go on an all bread and cheese diet from now on, or never see any food that is lactose-based again.

The public transportation system here is okay, but it doesn't have to be great considering everyone ranging from the age of 5-105 owns a bike. There is a bus system, a metro, and a tram system. I have only been on the bus and tram-the metro seems almost pointless. They also have chipcards here, which you just scan in when you get on whatever you are traveling by, and scan out when you get off. However, apparently the government is monitoring people's travels who are residents here, and are going to start charging per kilometer. The poorer people live further out of the city, and most likely will have to pay more to get in to the city for work, which makes no sense.

Bikes: I have never seen so many cruiser handlebars, skirt guards, chain guards, long bikes, and whatever else you can do to modify a bike for everyday living. It seems as though everyone here abides by the rules of the slow bicycle movement. I also definitely saw someone biking in 6 inch heels last night. I had also never ridden on the back of a bike on a rack before in my life, well, until last night. It is extremely common to conduct such practice here, and it doesn't even seem unsafe. Maybe its the lack of cars and flat roads-completely flat. It is fun-I must say.

I have been lacking with the photography lately (that is going to change pronto), and just relaxing and enjoying summer to the fullest. Been going up to pretty boy a lot lately, even just for some late day swims. It is so beautiful up there, and just nice to escape the city every now and then. However, there is a rope swing hanging from one of the trees at one rock spot, and u have to clear the shallow area. Well, my hand slid off the rope getting tangled, and i was falling right towards the rocks, so instead of having a broken ankle or something, i have one (possibly two?) broken fingers and a sprained wrist. It hasn't stopped me though.

I also got a job (within the first week of being back to baltimore, which is sort of amazing. I am a barista......at the double tree near Hopkins. It doesn't get much traffic, but oh well.

Whartscape is also going on right now. Sort of wish I wasn't working, but what can you do. What I have been to so far has been great.

Highways to Nowhere

I stumbled upon this blog while looking up demolished train stations, and what they came to be (another very good blog entry on this website). However, the "Highways to Nowhere: The 7 Most Ridiculous New Roads Being Built in America" entry is extremely interesting.

I have known about various "roads to nowhere" projects, especially the highway to nowhere in New Mexico, and the bridge to nowhere in Alaska; however, I did not realize how many of these projects are still occurring, and are being proposed.

"Intercounty Connector — Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, Maryland

Former governor Parris Glendening’s assessment that this highway project would be an environmental disaster for the state didn’t prevent the Bush administration from later fast-tracking it.

The Intercounty Connector would stretch 18 miles across the suburban counties and cost up to $3 billion to build by the time it is completed in 2012. Its six to eight lanes would be tolled, but before the revenue starts coming in, the project would consume $2 billion from the state’s reserves and leave Maryland at 93% of its legal debt capacity, making it difficult for it to fund other major projects - like needed new light rail lines in Baltimore.

From the beginning, the Intercounty Connector has infuriated environmental activists. Understandably so, as the chosen alignment would destroy nearly 1,000 acres of forest and induce even more sprawl in the greater D.C. suburbs.

To make matters worse, the project won’t even be much of a help in clearing the traffic on Washington’s infamously congested Beltway. Even though the ICC would be built on average just four miles from that road, its net effect would be to increase the number of miles traveled by Marylanders in their cars, rather than reduce such movement.

Construction has just begun the project, but there’s still time to shut it down."

I shot all my work with my mamiya, for I forgot my Nikon battery charger, and didn't feel the need to invest in a new one (I had done that on a previous trip, and now am he proud owner of two chargers-I don't need a third).

Younger Than Jesus

The Generational: Younger Than Jesus Show is currently going on at the New Museum in Manhattan. I recommend everyone go see it; however, I thought it was absolutely awful, and poorly curated. The reason why I say go see this show is that this is the artwork being showcased for our generation. We are part of the group of artists that were selected for this show and catalog. The show only included 55 artists out of the 500 selected for the catalog, and it was more than unimpressive. The selection of artwork was too sporadic, and the placement of work in the space made no sense. It was too hard to focus on individual pieces because large pieces were placed next to other large pieces, which became extremely distracting. Therefore, the smaller pieces, and the pieces in the back hallway/staircase became lost. It is too large of a show concept to succeed.

I may be bias, but I thought that some of the stronger work exhibited were the photography.

I have been in new york city for the past month, (the new york summer studio intensive program). We had (shitty) living situations at SVA, and awesome studios in DUMBO.

encounters:

While biking on the Brooklyn Bridge, my chain popped. I stopped, pulled over, and flipped my bike upside down. While going into my bag to retrieve a wrench, a guy stopped to see if I needed any help. He was a racer, and wasn't sure if I had a wrench with me. After brief conversation, we both realized we were from Pittsburgh. It is astounding how incredibly small the world is. He was thinking of moving back because it is much cheaper, but hadn't been there in awhile; we began to talk about what had changed in the city (not much), among other things. Afterwards, we went our separate ways with the satisfaction of a good conversation. That was enough.

I decided to venture out to the Flushing-Corona park in Queens to see the Redlining show at the Queens Museum. Afterwards, I was exploring the park area, when I received a phone call. I proceeded to sit on the bench around the globe leftover from the '64 Worlds Fair. My baby (Mamiya 7 II) was wrapped around my side at the time. During the call, a Mister Softee truck pulled up to where I was sitting. The guy working stared at me for about 3 minutes, and then served the line of screaming kids cones and shakes. Afterwards, he pointed his Mamiya 7 II out the window and smiled. I went over to have a brief conversation about how great of a camera it is.

I also ran into a few friends (that I haven't seen since high school) in the city. Given how many people are not only living, but visiting, I find it amazing that I am still able to bump into people.

I was really frustrated with everything I was working on in social documentary, so I decided to suck it up and drive 2 hours to Breezewood, PA (well it took my a little over an hour and a half to get there, but we won't talk about that). I'm really happy with what I shot (will actually see when I get my film back on Friday. Here are a few digital tests.

Although Breezewood is considered a town, it really doesn't have much of a population. It is mostly known for I-70 meeting up with I-76 (PA Turnpike), and route 30 is around there somewhere. Essentially, it is just a mass conglomeration of fast food restaurants, motels, and tackiness. Along my way, I picked up a tacky shot glass souvenir, (notice the motto is "The Town of Motels"). I also picked up Baird a magnet that said Breezewood, Pa that had a bear, a moose, forest and crossed rifles on it. Classy. All at the gifts and souvenirs shop.

Font Studies

The font businesses use is extremely important in he way they are portraying their establishment. "Fussier" fonts are more often geared towards tourists, whereas, fonts suchg as Helvetica and Verdana are more geared towards locals and people that are from the immediate area. I did a font study within the Fell's Point area (for an assignment last semester in Urbanism), focusing on the tourist area which is much more well known than the adjacent, lower-income Hispanic area.

I think a dark cloud is following me when it comes to printers. I jammed a Hopkins library copy machine yesterday (not my fault), my epson r300 decided that it needs its ink waste cartridge replaced and won't print (not my fault), and I just jammed a printer in bunting (again...not my fault). So far I have only been able to fix the issue in bunting.

However, I finally was able to print what I had to, it's only been a good 3 days without printing, since before my printer had this issue, it decided to run out of most ink colors.

I hope this doesn't continue.
